What is Epigenetics? - with Nessa Carey

Why your DNA is not your destiny. Molecular biologist Nessa Carey presents an introduction to epigenetics and explains how it shapes life. Epigenetics is a rapidly moving field that has transformed our understanding of how one set of genes can create the masterpiece that is each of us. It's also leading scientists into unexpected and exciting areas such as new ways to treat disease, understand drug addiction or unravel the lifelong consequences of early childhood trauma. Nessa Carey is a geneticist and author of The Epigenetics Revolution. She has a degree in Immunology, PhD in Virology, was a post-doctoral researcher in Human Genetics, and a senior lecturer at Imperial College London in Molecular Biology. She's also spent 10 years in the biotechnology industry and now works in the pharmaceutical sector. Epigenetics & Personal Health: Can We Control Our Own Future? | Matt Riemann | TEDxVeniceBeach

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We’ve flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx’s curatorial guidelines. The speaker makes claims about the phenotypic representation of health that are not supported by legitimate scientific evidence as well as assertions about epigenetics that oversimplify the current understanding of how lifestyle choices affect gene regulation and long-term health. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf What if you could control the fate of your future health? What if you could alter the hard wiring of your genetic expression with your behavior and surroundings? Matt Reimann shows us the exciting new field of epigenetics and how it will change your stars. Matt is a social entrepreneur in the fields of personalized health and future medicine. In 2013, Matt founded the Ultimate Human Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to transform world health and assist in eliminating chronic pain and disease from the planet. Matt has founded 7 businesses in health and medicine over the past 10 years, most recently launching ph360.me, the world’s first smart health app based on personalized epigenetics and gene expression. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
